Geniculate Artery Embolisation (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, especially when other treatments such as medications, physiotherapy, or injections have not provided lasting relief.
The procedure works by reducing excess blood flow to the inflamed areas of the knee joint lining (synovium). This helps to decrease inflammation, swelling, and pain.
Who is it for?
GAE may be suitable for patients who:
- Have moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis
- Experience ongoing pain despite non-surgical treatments
- Are not ready or not suitable for knee replacement surgery
- Prefer a non-surgical option with a quicker recovery time
How is the Procedure Done?
- The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with light sedation.
- A small catheter is inserted through a tiny incision in the groin or wrist and guided to the geniculate arteries (small vessels supplying the knee).
- Tiny particles are then injected to reduce abnormal blood flow to the painful areas of the joint.
- The procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours and is done as a day procedure.
What to Expect After the Procedure
- Most patients go home the same day.
- Mild knee discomfort or bruising may occur but usually settles within a few days.
- Pain relief generally begins within 1 to 4 weeks, with continued improvement over several months.
- Many patients experience significant improvement in pain, stiffness, and mobility.
Risks and Side Effects
GAE is generally safe and well-tolerated. Potential risks are low but may include:
- Bruising or soreness at the catheter entry site
- Temporary skin disclouration
- Mild knee swelling or temporary increase in discomfort
- Rarely, non-target embolisation or infection
Follow-Up
We will monitor your progress with follow-up appointments. In some cases, repeat treatment may be considered if symptoms return over time.
